Response to the Boston Herald

Another Seattle in Boston?

OK people! What have we got here? After reading the article titled "Police prep for protests over biotech conference at Hynes", in Page 7 of the Boston Herald Saturday March 4th 2000 addition, I felt like there needed to be some clarification on the facts.

First it was reported olive oil was used in the streets as an anti-police tactic. At $15 a gallon they'd have to be pretty wealthy non-violent protesters, not very likely I'd say. As for the use of ball bearings, also supposedly to "prevent police from using horses", I think the police might have been confusing the bearings with the plastic bullets they where shooting at pedestrians. Oh, by the way I was in Seattle and I didn't see any of the thousands of families with children, union workers, or senior citizens, that where celebrating in the streets of Seattle during the World Trade Organization's anti-democratic meetings, spraying urine or bleach at anybody, or throwing "chunks of concrete" using "BB guns" or "wrist rockets", come on. What would that accomplish by the way, the police had on full riot gear and were driving around in armored trucks. And "protesters" were violent?

No, the only violence in Seattle was the tear gas and concussion grenades from those who were supposed to be there to "serve and protect". And who exactly were the "peace officers" protecting? The corrupt corporate CEO's and globalization supporting government officials? What about the 50,000 plus non-violent citizens practicing their constitutional right to free assembly and free speech?

Another Seattle in Boston? I predict that if there is any violence in Boston on March 26-30th it will be from those same people in military style body armor, using military weapons and artillery, and practicing their urban warfare tactics. But, I hope everyone in Boston will get a chance to feel the peace, celebratory fun, citizen solidarity and non-violent festival atmosphere I experienced in the streets and homes of Seattle, minus the police violence of course. So, if you would like to see for yourself what real democracy can become, then join the free festivities at Biodevastation2000 on March 26, 2000 in the streets of Boston. Hope to see you there. J.B.
